The Church knew in the 1950s that Abbé Pierre was a “seriously sick man”. For decades, Abbé Pierre was revered as France's champion of the poor. But behind his public image as a celebrated humanitarian, Church leaders knew of serious psychiatric problems and allegations of sexual abuse.
