An estimated 2.3 million faithful gathered in Belém, Brazil, on 11 October for the 234th Círio de Nazaré, one of the world’s largest religious processions. The 3.6-kilometre pilgrimage lasted five hours, with some devotees walking on their knees. Among them was a young man giving thanks after his mother was spared a threatened foot amputation.
“Depending on all these factors, the pope will also adjust his pontificate, if it needs to be adjusted,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin told reporters in Rome, hours after visiting the 71-year-old pontiff at Gemelli Hospital. Parolin said the Nov. 6 to 17 journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru “will depend on the doctors.” The Vatican has not said what stage the cancer is in, or whether the lymph nodes removed during Tuesday’s operation were clear.

Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham, UK, has granted in-principle permission for two celebrations of Mass according to the medieval Sarum Use in his archdiocese. In a letter dated 6 October, the Archbishop approved the proposal, subject to further written permissions from the celebrating priests and those responsible for the venues. The Sarum Use is a medieval form of the Roman Catholic liturgy that developed in Salisbury, England, in the 11th century. Its name comes from Sarum, the Latin name for Salisbury. Similar to the Traditional Latin Mass, it has distinctive prayers, chants, vestments and a liturgical calendar. The Masses could take place in 2027.

Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim, Norway, wrote on October 15 about the Vatican’s Amoris Laetitia conference. Regarding Holy Communion for adulterers, he stated: “Concerning ‘irregular’ relationships, I find our Catholic communities normally embrace these maturely and well. It can be liberating for persons in such situations to be in a setting where their ‘irregularity’ is acknowledged, not relativised.” He cited the allegedly “many” faithful he knows who seek a blessing at Communion Sunday after Sunday, aware they cannot receive the sacrament. Such prolonged “sacramental exile” can prepare a homecoming: “Christ gave us his rigorous commandments to educate us and to liberate us from ourselves.”
