Born in Italy in 1972, Andreolli is a Xaverian missionary who has worked in Brazil's Amazon region since 2007. He was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Belém on April 15, 2023. Footage of that consecration shows a ceremonial pagan gesture toward the end of the liturgy inside the cathedral. Bishop Beat Grögli of St. Gallen, Switzerland, has defended the practice of women delivering homilies at Mass, although canon law defines the homily as an inherent part of the liturgy. Kath.ch reported on October 8 that Bishop Grögli told a group of women that this prohibited practice had existed in his diocese for nearly 50 years. He suggested that reversing the practice would be incomprehensible.
