Preliminary Recourse of FSSPX Rejected: The Vatican’s deadline to respond to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) regarding its preliminary recourse against the July 2 decree declaring six bishops automatically excommunicated has now passed, notes @Michael Haynes The FSSPX submitted its recourse to the Holy See on July 11. Under canon law, the competent authority had 30 days to respond. With that period now expired without a decision, the FSSPX can proceed to the next stage of its canonical challenge. Canon 1735 provides that when no decision is issued within the prescribed 30 days, the time limit for presenting hierarchical recourse begins to run from the 30th day.

Leo’s liturgical problem: SSPX and the Latin Mass

VATICAN CITY (Per Mariam) — The return of Pope Leo from his summer vacation serves as a useful moment for both the pontiff and the wider Church to take stock of his pontificate after another year, with a number of key agenda items demanding his early attention. As the motorcade departed the papal villas in Castel Gandolfo on the evening of July 27, Vatican observers began to resume their normal posts as Leo’s return to the Vatican signalled the pope’s return to work. This year he took nearly the full month of July for a personal holiday, and though it was interspersed with some lighter duties and trips to pilgrimage spots, it was overall a period of quiet. No official meetings or audiences were scheduled and it is the longest single block of time that Leo has spent away from work since he was elected – last summer he took two separate and shorter holidays at Castel Gandolfo. Much Ado About Nothing

Of the reward of man according to his works, or of misery.

"It must be considered, however, that if there is a determined way of arriving at some end, those who proceed by a contrary way, or who turn aside from the right way, cannot attain that end. For a sick person is not cured if he uses the contrary things which the physician forbids, except perhaps by accident. Now there is a determined way of arriving at happiness, namely through virtue. For nothing attains its own end except by performing well what is proper to it: neither would a plant produce fruit if the mode of its natural operation were not preserved in it; nor would a runner reach the prize, or a soldier the palm, unless each operated according to his proper office. But for a man to operate rightly his proper operation is for him to operate according to virtue: for the virtue of each thing is that which makes its possessor good and renders his work good, as is said in Book II of the Ethics. Therefore, since the ultimate end of man is eternal life, of which it has been spoken, not …Okuninzi

Vatican diplomat calls for end to Ukraine war during Moscow visit: Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday. “Let us be clear, this war must end,” Gallagher said after the talks. He warned that every additional day of fighting creates new victims and makes future reconciliation more difficult. Gallagher said the talks also covered possible paths toward peace and humanitarian issues. It is Gallagher’s first visit to Moscow since 2021.

Why I hate the old Latin Mass: A confession

(RNS) — Penitent: Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been a week since my last column, I mean my last confession. Since that time, I have expressed hatred toward the old Latin Mass, aka the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), aka the Tridentine Mass, aka … Priest: Yes, yes, I know what you are talking about. The Mass that was celebrated in the Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council. Penitent: The old Latin Mass is like a zombie. When we went from Latin into English in 1964, we thought it was dead, but it keeps coming back. We thought it would fade away or people would be satisfied with going to a Latin version of the new liturgy. Not so. Priest: Hatred is a sin. Jesus told us to love one another as he has loved us. Penitent: I know. Actually, I don’t hate the people who go to the old Latin Mass. Many of them are nice, pious people. They find spiritual nourishment in their Mass. With better catechesis, I think they would appreciate the new liturgy. On the other hand, I do hate …

Nuncio Negotiates Exit of Italian Bishop, 64, After Vatican Visitation

Bishop Guido Gallese, 64, of Alessandria, Piedmont, is reportedly set to be removed from his diocese.
LoSpiffero.com wrote on August 23 that the Apostolic Nuncio to Italy, Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, has been handling negotiations over Gallese’s exit following an Apostolic Visitation conducted by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello earlier this year.
Bishop Gallese, who is described as reluctant to leave, had sought a transfer to another diocese, but the proposal was rejected.
Archbishop Peña Parra, who previously served as the Substitute for General Affairs in the Vatican Secretariat of State, offered the bishop several possible “ways out.”
The solution now under discussion would see Bishop Gallese become ecclesiastical assistant to the Collegamento Nazionale Santuari, Italy’s national network of Catholic shrines.
Ansa.it reported that the Apostolic Visitation focused on the administration and finances of the diocese amid controversy over the bishop’s lifestyle. Considerable media attention …Okuninzi

Rev. Michael Pfleger Cleared of Latest Abuse Allegation

Rev. Michael Pfleger, 77, was reinstated effective August 24 after the Archdiocese of Chicago's Independent Review Board completed its investigation. He is known nationally for his progressive activism.
Cardinal Blase Cupich, 77, said the board, assisted by the Office of Child Protection and outside investigators, concluded there was “no reason to believe” Pfleger was guilty of the allegation. Cupich accepted the recommendation and returned him to ministry at St. Sabina.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times reporting, a woman alleged that Pfleger sexually abused her when she was a girl attending St. Sabina's school sometime between 1993 and 1995. The allegation surfaced this July, and Pfleger was removed from ministry on July 11 while it was investigated.
Rev. Pfleger denied it emphatically from the outset, calling it an “absolute lie.”
Under archdiocesan policy, the allegation was reported to police, and the accuser was offered assistance through the church's Victim Assistance Ministry. …Okuninzi

Kenya: Fake Priest Celebrates Mass Alongside Bishop Before Being Exposed

A fake priest in Kenya managed to concelebrate the Eucharist alongside Bishop John Mbinda of Lodwar before being exposed.
Jones Bogonko Onchonga used forged documents to pose as a Catholic priest and “celebrate” Eucharists in several churches.
Suspicions arose during a Eucharist on August 9, when Catholics noticed irregularities in his celebration: he appeared tense and left the altar during the service. A photo was shared among local clergy, prompting questions about his liturgical identity.
The Diocese of Lodwar later confirmed that he was not an ordained priest, but a married layman and father of two.
He now faces criminal charges over the alleged impersonation and use of false documents.
According to Fides, police said Onchonga confessed to having impersonated a priest for almost two years.

Leo XIV: "Novus Ordo Rooted in and Respected the Tradition of Church"

At today’s General Audience, Leo XIV praised the failed liturgical reform after Vatican II.
He quoted extensively from a letter by the future Paul VI, Cardinal Montini, dated October 1962. He wrote that the faithful “cannot and must no longer remain silent and passive”.
No Participation: Novus Ordo Churches Empty
Leo XIV added that “the participation of the faithful cannot be passive”. The Conciliar reform “was intended to allow the liturgy to shine forth”.
He believes there was “the need to make the richness of the biblical texts and prayers more accessible to all the faithful”.
"Necessary" to Revise Liturgy
Furthermore, Leo XIV claims that the liturgy “has always been subject to developments and changes”.
“It is therefore not surprising that the Second Vatican Council too, with the utmost respect for the heritage of tradition, and precisely in order to make it more accessible, considered it necessary to revise the liturgical books.”
According to Leo XIV, “the liturgical reform promoted …Okuninzi

German Bishop Opposes Efforts to Convince People of the Gospel

Bishop Gerhard Feige of Magdeburg, Germany, has criticized calls for new evangelization strategies as a response to declining Church membership.
“I am very skeptical of strategies and methods aimed at deliberately persuading people,” Monsignor Feige told Herder Korrespondenz in its September issue.
Addressing secularization, pluralization, individualization, increased mobility and digitalization, Bishop Feige said: “Methods of evangelization hardly seem to me to be the right response to these complex phenomena.”
Instead, the bishop argued that the Church should focus on living out its mission through service to others, “It is not about imposing the Gospel on people,” he said. “The present age challenges us to be a Church that is as authentic and committed to serving others as possible.”

Monk Elijah
(Clement, Disciple of the Apostle Peter – Volume III)
The central theme of The Apocalypse, the third volume of the tetralogy Clement, Disciple of the Apostle Peter, is the Apostle John’s Revelation on the island of Patmos. Through the prism of such disturbing contemporary phenomena as the new world order, microchipping, gender ideology, heresy, idolatry and occultism, the book explores the meaning of apocalyptic symbols and imagery.
One interesting aspect of the book is its prophetic nature. First published in Czech in 2019, the book highlighted dangerous means of global control and depopulation, such as microchipping, vaccination and digitalisation, which became a reality almost immediately in the near future (the Covid pandemic, artificial intelligence).
Not only does …

Leo XIV to Lutheran Lay-Bishops: We Have a “Shared Mission in the World”

Today, Leo XIV welcomed the Lutheran State Bishops of Norway in audience.
Referring to the fallen human condition, Leo XIV said it is “all too easy to adopt an attitude of hostility toward those with whom we disagree”.
That is why he seeks – at least with Protestants – “concrete paths of reconciliation and of fraternity”.
Leo XIV recalled Christ’s prayer for the unity of his disciples.
Key phrase: “Grounded in our common Baptism and our shared mission in the world, I pray that we may always grow together in our service to the promotion of peace and justice.”
